Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Constitution deal with defamation. Defamation is the act of making a false statement that harms the reputation of another person.

Section 499 defines defamation as a criminal offence in India. According to this section, whoever speaks or publishes any defamatory statement about another person with the intention to harm their reputation or knowing or having reason to believe that such a statement will harm their reputation, is said to have committed the offence of defamation.

Section 500 prescribes the punishment for defamation. Whoever is found guilty of the offence of defamation under Section 499 may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine, or both.

These sections are aimed at protecting the reputation of individuals and preventing the spread of false information that may harm their reputation.
